Marta Alexy PhD is an agricultural engineer, associate professor at the ELTE Faculty of Informatics and responsible for the courses Digitalization in agrifood systems and Applied Data Science. For several years, she has been researching the practical application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods in large-scale livestock production. Prior to joining the university, she worked for nearly ten years in the corporate sector of large-scale livestock farming, where her responsibilities included the developing and sales of automated housing technology for large-scale pig and poultry farms. Together with electrical engineer Sandor Szabo PhD, they developed an innovative idea that won the start-up competition of Óbuda University in 2022. Subsequently, they founded the startup Birdwatcher with the support and co-ownership of Óbuda University. As a university professor she teaches precision livestock farming technologies to agricultural engineering and computer science students at several universities in Hungary. At the ELTE Faculty of Informatics she is the head of the Precision Agriculture research group. Organizer of the IT section of the PREGA (Precision Agriculture) conference.
Application of Computer vision in poultry farming
The use of digital technologies is becoming increasingly important in large-scale livestock farming. In poultry farming, where there are thousands of birds in a barn, the only way to collect individual data on birds reliably and with high accuracy is by collecting and analysing camera images. In our project using computer vision, we have developed a simple and reliable method for estimating the individual weights of birds that can be applied in real farming practice. This allows us to provide poultry farmers with more accurate and reliable information without disturbing the poultry flock, instead of the weight measurement methods used in practice. The images and videos captured by the cameras can also be used to determine the veterinary status of poultry flocks and to detect diseases early, thus reducing the risk of poultry meat production for the poultry farmer. Our innovative solution has been developed and is being further developed through our start-up Birdwatcher.
