Data Science: Mythbusting in a Post-Truth World

Welcome to the "Post-truth World" — a place where misinformation is more common than the truth. It's getting hard to tell fact from fiction, and getting much worse every day. Fortunately, data science is leading the fight in this war to restore truth to our world.

In this session, we'll use data science to bust several myths that are pervasive in our post-truth world. We'll learn that the world isn't really as bad as some would like us to believe. In addition, we'll learn how we can use simple practices from data science to avoid being misled by those who wish to deceive us.

I've delivered over 100 keynotes, presentations, and workshops at developer conferences on every continent in the world (including Antarctica). I've spoken at Microsoft Ignite, NDC, Devoxx, CodeMash, Techorama, DevSum, KCDC, VS Live, IT/Dev Connections, and more. I'm also the co-organizer of AntarctiConf and a member of the speaker-selection committee for KCDC.

Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Software

Whether you realize it or not, we are currently entering the era of artificial intelligence. A.I. is radically transforming our economy, our society, and our world. However, most software developers have not yet learned this valuable set of skills.

In this session, you'll learn about modern data-driven AI. You'll learn what it is, why it's important, and how it will impact you, your career, and our future.

You'll also learn about the tools, technology, and trends driving the A.I. revolution -- all in a way that's simple and easy to understand.

The AI Developer's Toolkit

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere! AI is beginning to transform our products, our companies, and our world. However, most software developers have not yet added these modern data-driven AI tools to their professional toolkit.

In this session, you’ll learn about all of the tools in the AI developer’s toolkit. We’ll survey a wide variety of tools for performing automated tasks with tables, text, audio, images, video, and more.

You’ll learn how to use machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning to solve a variety of real-world problems. In addition, you’ll learn how to compose these models together to build modular AI applications and cyber-physical systems.

If you’re looking for a quick survey of everything that you can currently do with state-of-the-art AI, without getting into all of the math, code, or vendor specifics, then this session is right for you!

Artificial Intelligence: Preparing Your Career for AI

Whether you realize it or not, we are currently entering the era of artificial intelligence. AI technologies are radically transforming our lives, our work, and our world. However, most of us have not yet learned how to leverage the power of this new technology.

In this session, you’ll learn the five things you should be doing right now to prepare for the coming wave of AI-enabled automation:

1. Educate yourself about AI
2. Update your career for AI
3. Invest in an AI-first economy
4. Use AI ethically and responsibly
5. Adapt to what comes next

The future belongs to those who are willing to invest in AI now. Don’t get left behind!

The Mindful Developer: The Science of Stress Management

Does your career as a software developer cause you stress? What are you currently doing to manage the negative health effects of this stress?

Software developers are uniquely predisposed to certain stress-related mental-health issues. The key problem is that we evolved to survive in a wilderness context. However, these same survival adaptations are now in direct conflict with our modern high-tech world.

In this session, we'll learn about the science of mindfulness practices. We’ll discuss practices like meditation, biofeedback, neurofeedback, and more. In addition, we will learn how we, as software developers, can use these practices to reduce stress, improve our mental health, and increase our focus.

There will be NO new-age nonsense, mystical mumbo-jumbo, or quantum flapdoodle in this session -- only evidence-based science, in plain English.
