Flipping the Curve: A Platform Engineer's Guide to Unlocking the Silent 80%

Many platform engineering teams unknowingly create an "inverse productivity curve": their platforms are highly effective for a small group of experts but leave the vast majority of their developers behind. This happens because platform engineers intuitively build for their peers, the most vocal 20% of users who prefer high-end but often highly complex solutions, instead of for the silent 80% majority who need simple, straightforward solutions.

This session provides a practical guide and case studies to break this cycle using "guerrilla product thinking." Attendees will learn practical, low-effort tactics to shift their focus, such as visualizing their user base to identify the true majority and conducting targeted interviews with silent developers to uncover the most impactful problems. The talk will equip every platform engineer with the mindset and tools needed to flip the productivity curve, eliminate expert bottlenecks, and build platforms that accelerate the entire organization.

Fixing Resource Labeling: Tying Infrastructure Metadata to Backstage with Terraform

Consistent and accurate resource labeling is essential in cloud environments. However, manual or inconsistent practices often result in labels that are incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate.

Learn how to restructure and label infrastructure using Backstage components as the source of truth for metadata. With an open-source Terraform provider for Backstage, metadata and labels are automatically injected, keeping them consistent and up-to-date with every plan. To ensure reliability, a metadata wrapper module was developed, and the provider’s resiliency enhanced, preventing Backstage outages from disrupting deployments.

This session will provide a clear understanding of how to integrate Terraform with Backstage to enable automated label injection by structuring infrastructure around components. Attendees will also gain actionable insights to bridge the gap between infrastructure management and the Backstage metadata catalog.

Helmless: Fast Serverless Deployments Without the Overhead of Kubernetes and Terraform

Discover how helmless.io, an open-source solution, simplifies serverless deployments with Helm Charts and CI/CD pipelines. It delivers the GitOps-style workflows and velocity of Kubernetes CICD, tailored for serverless environments like AWS Fargate and Google Cloud Run—without the complexity of managing Kubernetes itself.

This poster showcases real-world results, including a tenfold increase in deployment frequency and a 95% reduction in change lead time, powering hundreds of Google Cloud Run containers in production for over a year. Visuals include architecture diagrams, before-and-after comparisons, key metrics, and a roadmap for extending to other cloud providers.

Attendees will learn how to improve serverless workflows, reduce complexity, and adopt a cloud-agnostic GitOps approach, while contributing to the future of this innovative, developer-friendly solution.
