FAST Agile: From the trenches

Over the past 10 months and change we've been working as a part of a FaST Agile collective. FaST Agile (Fluid [agile] Scaling Technology) is a new "way for people to self-organise around work - that scales." In this talk we'll give an overview of FaST, why we chose to try it, how it's been going, experiments we've tried, and how we feel about it.

Mike Vitale (he/him) is a software and continuous delivery consultant and coach with 25+ years experience in agile software development whose most recent production deliveries have been non-events.

Micro-Services and Monorepos

Micro-services are all the rage. When you create an entire suite of micro-services, how you store your code has far-reaching impacts.

In this session, Mike Vitale and Markus Silpala will talk about their experiences with monolithic code bases as well as micro-services, and will dive into different ways to store code — from individual code repositories, to a monorepo for all your code, and a few options in between. Every choice is a trade-off; the speakers will cover the pros, cons, and mitigations for the different options. If you like to learn with your fingers, you can clone their code and follow along from there.

Visualizing Empowerment

Everyone wants to be empowered at work. Everyone's boss wants to say that their teams are empowered. But when you really think about it, how do you measure empowerment?

Ahead of the forthcoming book, Visualizing Empowerment by Skylar Watson, get a hands-on experience with the techniques described in the book for how you can Visualize Empowerment in your team, or within teams you work with, from someone who was "there when it all began!" Skylar and I co-created the techniques he describes in the book while coaching multiple software teams in Dearborn, MI.

Mike Vitale, an Agile coach with 25+ years experience in software development and coaching, will discuss why empowerment is important, as well as the benefits both employees and the company receive when teams are more empowered. He will also demonstrate a simple, practical method to measure employee empowerment in the work environment. By the end of this session, you will have the tools you need to go back to your office and take your team through an exercise to examine your own workplace, and engage in conversations with both employees and management around improving the empowerment quotient in your work environment.
