Shelly R. Lesher is Professor and Chair of the Physics Department at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. As an experimental nuclear physicist, Dr. Lesher has authored over 60 scientific publications that focus on understanding the structure of nuclei and is involved in public scholarship around the intersection of nuclear science and society through a podcast, My Nuclear Life. She has held postdoctoral positions at the Katholiek Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and her honors include a Yale Presidential Fellowship and election as fellow of the American Physical Society.

There are multiple security and safety systems in place to prevent the premature launch of nuclear weapons. As digital technology becomes more prevalent in our world, the nuclear enterprise is not immune to its integration into everything from weapons control to manufacturing needed materials. However, the nuclear stockpile and its technology is old and outdated. What if the best way to prevent global thermonuclear war is not with technology? This talk will discuss the times when technology failed and brought the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation.
