Empowering Partnerships: Designing Internships & Student Seminars in Community Engaged Public Health

Learn to design college internship courses and placements with community partners, where students gain insights into public health dimensions of contemporary social issues such as overdose, homelessness, harm reduction, chronic absenteeism and education disparities, and food insecurity. Design how to support experiential learning, such as through a weekly seminar, community-based mentorship, and how to sustain benefits sought by community partners such as workforce development. Workshop participants will enhance skills such as: a) developing genuine, sustainable community partnerships, b) designing a seminar syllabus that integrates theoretical frameworks including critical theory and practical strategies while preparing students to engage meaningfully with cultural humility, and c) advancing structural change strategies that support community engagement practices when seeking to preventatively address social determinants of health.
