Head of Secondary Science | IB Physics | Inquiry-led, tech-integrated teaching
Actions
Nauman Ali is Head of Secondary Science at Beech Hall School Riyadh, where he leads the science department and teaches Physics from Grade 9 to 12, including IB Diploma Programme Physics at Standard and Higher Level. He has more than 16 years of international teaching experience and holds an MA in Education from Liverpool John Moores University. He is currently completing QTS through the University of Sunderland and the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL).
His teaching is built around inquiry and student ownership. He uses simulations, low-cost practical work and digital tools such as PhET, Wayground and Edpuzzle to make abstract science visible and to get every student thinking. He has led school and regional STEAM fairs, designed department-wide assessment and data systems, and supported colleagues through coaching and classroom walkthroughs.
He is interested in how technology, used with intent rather than for its own sake, can deepen understanding and widen access in the science classroom.
Spark the Aha Moment: Inquiry-Based Science with Digital Tools
Most science lessons still run on explanation, then practice. Students watch, copy and repeat, and the real thinking never quite arrives. This practical session shows how a few digital tools can change that and create genuine aha moments.
Drawing on physics teaching from Grade 7 to 12 and the IB Diploma Programme, it walks through a simple model: pose a problem, let students explore it through a simulation or low-cost practical, then use quick digital checks to surface and correct misconceptions in real time. You will see worked examples using PhET, Wayground and Edpuzzle, with ready-to-use activities for energy, optics and motion.
The focus is on intent. Every tool earns its place by making thinking visible, deepening understanding or widening access, not by adding novelty. The examples come from science, but the approach transfers to any subject.
You will leave with a clear, repeatable structure for inquiry-based lessons, a set of tools you can use straight away, and practical tips for keeping technology in service of learning rather than a distraction from it.
