Oracle Transactions - more than meets the eye

insert, update, write to disk, commit. That’s it, right? Well, yes and no. Well, no. Oracle is complex (you might have noticed) and it has a lot of mechanisms to ensure data integrity when you make changes. I hope I can explain what’s going on, so you can understand just how much work Oracle is doing to ensure the data you are reading and writing is correct, and showing how Oracle avoids doing work unless it really has to. I’m sorry, but this will involve showing you some block internals.

Blockbuster! A simple guide to Oracle block internals, and hacking them!

Do you understand how an Oracle block is put together? The more you understand about how the database works, the better you will be able to do your job. What if you have a major problem with your database and there’s a block-level problem - maybe something is corrupt. What can you do? What if you need to manually edit a block for other “reasons”, or you just want to understand the block structure a bit better. Come have a discussion about it. Let see what we can do to fix such problems. Lets see how rico2 (or bbed) works and what you can and cannot easily change within a block.

Unified Audit - you're already using it. Use it better.

If you are on Oracle 12.1 or higher you are using Unified Audit unless you ahve explicitly disabled it. Which is a very good idea on 12.1. However, you could be using it so much better. If you aren't auditing what's going on in your database, how would you know if you have a data breach, who did it and how. Potentially even what was stolen. You might also be suffering unexpected performance issues in relation to the Unified Audit, and not just in the broken 12.1 implementation of it! It just might not have materialised yet.

Fundamental Oracle Security – What Many Of You Are Not Doing

I tend to work in a few companies each year. Something I have been getting asked more and more, other than “make it faster”, it how to secure the Oracle database – frequently because of a failed audit. In companies and governments, I see; poor auditing, no security consideration, no lockdown of accounts, inadequate processes, and lots of risk. There are some easy and straightforward changes which you can make to your Oracle database which will make it more secure, harder to exploit and, in the unfortunate even of a data breach, give you a chance of noticing what happened! I will talk through the changes you can make and explain why they should be made, and the effort involved.

Get me off that F*cking Exadata!

Exadatas are amazing machines. They have some extraordinary capabilities. And they are quite expensive. I mean, really quite expensive. And we need to re-buy them every few years as they age.
A client came along one day and asked me "what can we do to cut the bills?"
I said "Nothing. Pay the money."
And they said "We don't want to! Can't we do something cheaper?".
"erm"
"Look, can you get us off those f*cking Exadata machines?"

This is a short story explaining if I could.
