I'm a director of engineering at a company called Taranis, managing multiple teams mixed with frontend and backend developers. Throughout my (more than 17 years) career my main focus was frontend development across many platforms such as web, mobile and more.
The thing that gets me excited the most is web performance. Being it achieving 60 fps on the frontend side, lighting fast HTTP calls on the backend side, or even optimizing SQL queries - I've always found a strong connection between user experience and retention to performance!
How Taranis managed to improve a legacy web application by 10x (and lived to tell the tale)
No matter how far technology progress gets, there will always be performance issues. Why? because humanity will continue to outsize demand over supply. Will always want more and we want it fast.
I want to tell you a story of how our company, while serving farmers and growers across millions of acres, have come to a point where the webapp just couldn't handle the amount of acres covered. And over a course of 4 sprints we were able to cut the response time from around 3-4 minutes to 3-4 seconds.
This story will take the audience through Javascript hidden speed tricks, React rendering optimization, HTTP best practices for performances and how to detect all that in a production environment!
