Postgres for the Sql Server DBA

Postgres is an amazing product and many people are quickly adopting it. This also means that many DBA’s are coming from different technical disciplines. Sometimes from Oracle, SQL Server or Mysql. Learning the tools and the differences between the systems can be daunting for some. I’ll go through the differences in the tools, administration and some of the internals between SQL Server and postgresql. This session is perfect for any SQL Server DBA that finds themselves working on a Postgres Database.

Master Upgrading PostgreSQL, Using Real World stories and examples

Upgrading Databases is never simple in large organizations with lots of various applications. You can’t always just push a few buttons and magically upgrade your DB. This presentation will show real-world examples of the steps we needed to take for PG upgrades. We will discuss the business issues you will run into and the technical issues. This is a great session for anyone looking to plan upgrades in the future and who has to do more than just “click a button” to upgrade.

How to: Never be on call as a DBA!

Engineers are not great at documentation, it’s just a fact of the industry. Data people are in the same group. In this talk, I’ll speak specifically to DBA and operational Data professionals to help them understand why Documentation is critical! I will also show some great methods to make it less painful and provide the solution to the biggest problem for all data professionals, Not having enough time for the projects they really want to work on. Making sure that you have documentation and sharing knowledge with others will guarantee you the ability to have a life outside of work!

Speaking and Community Involvement for the Introvert

Let’s be serious, I understand 99% of the audience for a technical conference are introverted. I’m not here to disagree with that, I'm here to talk about the introvert inside of me and how I quiet it just enough to truly improve my life. We will discuss why the idea of speaking and community involvement are important to you. If you think all you need is technical skills in this market then please join me in the session so you can see why you need so much more than that. The postgres community is growing very quickly and you can capitalize on this right now. We will go in depth on the key things you need to be successful in talking and presenting to others. The audience for this presentation is anyone that would like to be an expert in the industry and would like to worry less about future employment opportunities.

Critical DBA Tasks for Postgresql

Whether you are a new DBA or a seasoned professional. These are the critical items you need to do to make sure your Postgresql clusters are healthy and happy. Many times we can’t control what the applications are doing to our servers but we can do lots to make sure they can be ready for the flood. We will discuss Backups, Restores, Performance configuration, Vacuum policies, Size/Structure concerns and several other items. I’ll share free scripts you can use anytime to really understand your server. This is a great session for Dba’s, Accidental Dba’s, and anyone that is interested in understanding more about the clusters they manage.
