Lessons from Building Multilingual and Multimodal AI in Africa

AI is reshaping industries worldwide, but in Africa, the challenges of language diversity, limited resources, and data scarcity create unique hurdles and opportunities.
In this talk, I’ll share my journey building Swahili speech-to-text models, multilingual chatbots, and exploring multimodal AI with Google Cloud tools such as Vertex AI, Speech-to-Text, and Video Intelligence API.
We willl explore:
The real-world challenges of low-resource languages and how to overcome them.

Practical decisions in choosing between Vertex AI tools, open-source frameworks, and custom models.

Lessons from integrating AI into education, governance, and agritech solutions.

How developers can start small and scale solutions using cloud-native AI pipelines.

Attendees will leave with a playbook of practical insights what worked, what didn’t, and how to build inclusive AI that truly serves communities.

From Coding Without a Laptop to Building Voice-Powered AI with Google Cloud

In many parts of Africa, access to technology and learning resources is uneven, making a career in AI and data science feel out of reach. My own journey began in such a setting, learning Python through gamified mobile platforms without even owning a laptop. With persistence, open resources, and community support, I grew from these beginnings into building inclusive AI solutions rooted in Africa’s unique challenges and data.

In this session, I’ll first share how resilience, open-source tools, and ethical thinking shaped my path into AI. Then, we’ll shift into a hands-on beginner workshop where participants will build their very first voice-powered app using Google Cloud AI tools. Together, we’ll:

Connect to Google Cloud and set up Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech APIs

Convert speech into text and text back into voice in real time

Customize the app to make it interactive and engaging

No prior AI experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to learn. By the end, attendees will walk away with a simple working prototype, plus the confidence and foundational skills to explore more AI projects in the future.
