How to sabotage an internal product

Most larger tech companies have successful home-grown platform products. Things like front-end boilerplates, one-click environment builders, data generators, and design systems. You might be working on one of them!

Once they’re established, these tools get a lot of use. They have off-the-charts ROI. People can no longer code without them! They’re so ubiquitous that everyone in the company has an opinion about them. Team members behind those tools become subject-matter experts and highly valued.

Let’s play explore ways to take down these beloved tools.
What could contribute to their early demise?

Knowing how to sabotage our own product, will help us build healthier and more resilient platform products.

How I took a career break

By the end of 2024, I had spent over a decade as a passionate software engineer… and was deep into my third burnout. I had enough. I reflected upon the reasons, budgeted for the exit, and planned for a break in 2025. Eight months later, I returned to coding full time with a new set of guiding principles.

No regrets. Here’s what I did to recognise when to stop, rest, and prepare for the next phase of my career.
