Rob Volk is a SQL Server DBA in the Metro Atlanta area since 2001. An MCSE, he also moderates and answers the forums on SQLTeam.com. While an old-time cranky DBA, he no longer considers "business intelligence" an oxymoron or "the cloud" as merely atmospheric moisture, and is delightedly dipping his toes into both of these new oceans, and loves to do things in new and and unusual ways.

That's So Metadata: Discover Your Database From The Inside

Have you ever needed to learn a new database design and don't know where to begin? Or are trying to find out why a query doesn't perform well? Or need to provide security information to auditors or your security team?

SQL Server has numerous metadata facilities available to help you with these tasks and more. Functions, dynamic management views, and system stored procedures can illuminate details from a single column up through an entire SQL Server instance. We will demonstrate metadata techniques to help you:

- Document your database schema objects such as procedures, functions, tables, columns and indexes
- Investigate performance and look for bottlenecks and tuning opportunities
- Discover metadata to administer your databases backups, index maintenance, and security
- Apply your own metadata using extended properties

We will also cover the official Microsoft documentation on these features and other resources on how to use them.

Tame Your Unruly Data With Constraints

Bad data comes in many forms: duplicate rows, wrong data type, invalid values, and orphaned or missing foreign keys. Time is wasted cleansing, reviewing and correcting data, not to mention the potential hazards bad data can cause. This introductory presentation will explain the data types and constraints available in SQL Server, and how they can replace or augment business rules that would otherwise be written in application or procedure code. Performance benefits provided by constraints will be demonstrated. We will examine the various system views and procedures that describe constraints and how to use them to document your databases. You will be able to apply this knowledge to your database environments and see significant improvements in data quality, performance, and reliability.

Log Shipping for SQL Server

This session will cover the features and administration of log shipping in SQL Server. We will describe the basics of transaction logs, high availability and disaster recovery, and how log shipping can be used in those scenarios. We will demonstrate the Log Shipping Wizard, and also use the stored procedures to script a log shipping configuration. We will also demonstrate customized log shipping for scenarios where the built-in log shipping may not be adequate, such as log shipping from on-premises to cloud locations. We will also discuss how log shipping can be used to migrate to an Availability Group configuration, and other scenarios.
