Looking to broaden his skills, he later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he worked as a mason for one year. Upon returning to Colorado, Schmier entered the retail sector and spent five years co-owning and operating a liquor store in the Alamosa area. Through this business venture, he gained experience in customer service, inventory management, and day-to-day operations. Although the business provided valuable lessons, he found his greatest interest in construction and home building, where he could apply both creativity and craftsmanship.

Drawing on his diverse background, Rory founded and operated a custom home-building and remodeling company for more than 20 years. As a self-taught contractor, he specialized in custom homes and remodeling projects throughout the San Luis Valley and Durango regions. Today, he oversees a 300-acre hay production facility, managing planting schedules, irrigation systems, harvesting operations, equipment maintenance, and hay sales. He also supervises residential properties on the ranch and handles maintenance and tenant-related responsibilities. His background in construction, business ownership, and agriculture allows him to approach ranch operations with a broad range of skills and practical knowledge.
