Build Custom And Performant UI with Compose's Styles API

For years, building custom design systems in Jetpack Compose meant dealing with a delicate trade-off. We either fought against rigid MaterialTheme primitives or chained together long strings of Modifiers paired with InteractionSource boilerplate—often leading to unnecessary layout recalculations and heavy recomposition cycles during dynamic state changes. The new experimental Foundation Styles API completely changes the game. It introduces a declarative way to separate component structure from visual styling, natively supporting token-based design systems while unlocking massive performance gains. In this talk, we’ll dive deep into how the Styles API operates directly on StyleScope to skip the composition phase during visual updates. We will explore how to build truly custom, interaction-aware components (handling pressed, hovered, and disabled states) with zero boilerplate and built-in, fluid animations. If you want to scale your team's UI library without hurting your frame rate, this session is for you
