SRE, DevOps, and Platform Engineering: Unraveling the Differences

SRE, DevOps, and Platform Engineering get mentioned constantly in modern software teams, and a lot of the time they get blurred together. People use the terms as if they mean the same thing, even though they solve different problems and come from different ideas about how software should be built and run. This session breaks down what each one actually is, where it came from, and why the differences matter.

We’ll look at the core focus of each discipline. SRE is centered on reliability, scalability, and keeping systems healthy in production. DevOps is about improving how development and operations work together so teams can deliver software faster and with less friction. Platform Engineering focuses on building the internal tools and paved roads that help developers ship and operate software more effectively.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a clearer way to think about where these practices overlap, where they differ, and how they can work together in a real organization without becoming just another set of overloaded labels.
