Under the hood - how “EOP” works
Microsoft Exchange Online Protection (EOP) is a cloud-based email filtering service designed to protect your organization from spam, malware, phishing, and other email threats. Here’s a breakdown of how EOP works:
- Connection Filtering: When an email enters EOP, it first undergoes connection filtering, which checks the sender’s reputation. Most spam is blocked at this stage.
- Malware Filtering: The email is then scanned for malware. If malware is detected in the message or attachments, the email is quarantined. Admins can manage these quarantined messages.
- Policy Filtering: Next, the email is evaluated against any mail flow rules (also known as transport rules) that you have set up. These rules can trigger specific actions, such as sending notifications or redirecting emails.
- Content Filtering: The email is further inspected for spam, phishing, and spoofing. Based on the filtering verdict, actions such as quarantining the email or moving it to the Junk Email folder are taken.
- Delivery: Emails that pass all these filters are delivered to the recipients.
Key Features:
- Anti-Malware and Anti-Spam Protection: Built-in and customizable policies to protect against malware and spam.
- Anti-Phishing and Anti-Spoofing: Protection against phishing and spoofing attacks.
- Quarantine Management: Admins can manage quarantined messages and set policies for user interaction with quarantined emails.
- Mail Flow Rules: Customizable rules to control email flow and apply specific actions based on conditions.
- Reporting and Monitoring: Tools for message tracing, security reports, and monitoring email traffic.
EOP operates on a global network of datacenters, ensuring high availability and reliability.
Duration: This session will last approximately 45 minutes, including a 10-minute Q&A segment at the end.
Audience: This session is designed for IT professionals, system administrators, and anyone interested in email security
