Covering State Courts: Unlocking the Legal System
Over 98% of the U.S. court cases are found in state courthouses, where much of the country’s justice —and injustice— occurs. They're chronically under-covered compared to federal courts. But esoteric terms, archaic filing systems and unfriendly court staff can hamper access to a treasure trove of unmined stories. In this session, you’ll learn tips and tricks to navigate your local courts and a media law expert will show you how to fight for your First Amendment right to access documents and courtroom proceedings if anyone tries to (unlawfully) stop you.
