Breaking Barriers – Navigating the Gender Gap in Technology

During my session, I discussed how the gender gap in the technology industry reflects disparities in employment, pay, career advancement, and representation between men and women. Women hold only 25-30% of technical roles and earn about 80-90 cents for every dollar earned by men. They are underrepresented in leadership positions such as CTOs or CEOs and often face workplace challenges like unconscious bias, discrimination, and limited access to mentorship, leading to lower retention rates. Cultural stereotypes and lack of encouragement also contribute to fewer women pursuing STEM careers. Diversity in teams has been shown to improve innovation and financial performance, and equal representation helps close economic disparities and empowers future generations. Historical shifts, particularly since the mid-20th century, have opened more opportunities for women through policies like affirmative action and anti-discrimination laws. In the end, I encouraged the women to learn the latest technology i.e. Cloud Computing, AI, and Cyber Security.
