Land of My Mothers
This is not just a talk about women in STEM. It’s a story about inheritance, of ambition, and ultimately resistance.
I live in Wales, where the national anthem is Land of My Fathers. But as a woman of Mauritian descent working in British tech, I’ve often found myself navigating a different kind of homeland, one shaped not just by lineage, but by the untold stories of the women who raised me.
In Land of My Mothers, I share the story of Renuka Beeharry, my mother, a woman who dreamed of becoming a computer programmer but was prevented from doing so by the social expectations of her time. Her unfinished ambition became part of the legacy I carry into my own career in tech.
Against the backdrop of repeated rollbacks in diversity initiatives, I reflect on what we as women have inherited, what we’re fighting to keep, and how fragile progress can feel.
This talk weaves together personal history, current headlines, and structural realities into a call: to resist regression, to honour the women who came before us, and to keep building the bridge for those yet to come.
