Overcoming Platform Engineering’s Superpower - Invisibility

Platform Teams Have a Surprising Superpower: INVISIBILITY
Platform teams strive to be invisible in their implementation. When provisioning or upgrading infrastructure, we adopt opaque deployment models to ensure customers remain unaffected and unaware of any changes. Similarly, when making changes to CI/CD pipelines, we carefully minimise disruption, allowing developers to stay focused on delivering value without noticing the platform evolving beneath them.

However, this invisibility comes at a cost. When the platform works smoothly, the hard work of the team often goes unnoticed, undervalued, or even misunderstood. A platform team’s most effective work can remain hidden—and its impact, overlooked.

This talk explores how communication serves as the connective tissue of the Platform Maturity Model (PMM), enhancing and amplifying every pillar:

Product Thinking: Bridging the gap between platform work and customer needs through feedback loops and clear value articulation.
Developer Experience: Ensuring transparency in changes, clear documentation, and alignment with developer expectations.
Operational Excellence: Driving collaboration and efficiency through proactive updates and shared understanding.
Service Reliability: Building trust with transparent communication during incidents and beyond.
Cost Efficiency: Articulating trade-offs and showcasing the value delivered by platform investments.
By recognising communication as a multiplier for all aspects of platform maturity, platform teams can ensure their contributions are visible, celebrated, and aligned with organisational goals.

Attendees Will Gain:
A deeper understanding of how communication strengthens the PMM.
Practical strategies for improving communication across all five pillars.
Real-world examples and scenarios that demonstrate how to make platform work visible and valued.

Target audience: Platform professionals already familiar with the Platform Maturity Model.
