Containerization 101 - How containers originated and the future of cloud native development
Linux and containers are foundational to the cloud-native ecosystem, enabling scalable, portable, and efficient application deployment. This talk will walk attendees through the history of containerization as we know it today, starting with concepts like namespaces and cgroups that made containerization possible. We will look at the challenges of the pre-container era, such as dependency conflicts and virtualization inefficiencies, and illustrate how containers revolutionized software deployment.
Attendees will gain insights into the modern container ecosystem, including tools like containerd, CRI-O, and Kubernetes, and the role of OCI standard in driving interoperability. In conclusion, the talk will highlight trends such as microVMs, WebAssembly, and unikernels, and explore the future of containers.
This talk will give attendees a comprehensive understanding of the role of Linux and containers in cloud-native computing, their evolution, and their relevance to the broader ecosystem.
