From Contributor to Catalyst: How Developers Can Accelerate the Open Source Energy Transition

The energy transition demands robust, interoperable open source platforms—and onboarding new developers efficiently is critical to scaling these solutions. I have specialized in integrating RESTful APIs and automating test suites for grid orchestration tools such as PowSyBl and OpenSTEF. This talk will deliver a technical, step-by-step walkthrough of onboarding to LF Energy repositories: from understanding project architecture and setting up local dev environments with Docker Compose, to contributing Python-based data connectors and enhancing CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions. I’ll share detailed examples of implementing automated regression tests for DER forecasting modules and integrating third-party APIs for real-time telemetry ingestion. Attendees will gain actionable insights into code contribution workflows, best practices for collaborating on distributed teams, and strategies for aligning with open standards like CIM and IEC 61850. By demystifying the technical entry points and showcasing tangible impact, this session will empower more developers to drive innovation and reliability within the LF Energy ecosystem.
