Filipinx Gender Counternarratives
This panel centers the necessities of gender counternarratives to describe the Filipinx experiences. Veronica B. Salcedo will examine the sociological analysis of sexually nonconforming Pinay experiences to explore how white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, and imperialism manifest in various forms of essentialist discourse, including authenticity, respectability, and exotification, that impact SNC Pinays’ familial and romantic relations. Dr. Abby Saavedra, Dr. Kevin Yabes, and Edwin Carlos will examine how FilAm men navigate privileged and oppressed statuses and propose potential interventions to foster solidarity against intersectional oppression using psychological, quantitative methods. Dr. Wayne Silao Jopanda and Alyan Layug, using a participatory and kuwentuhan talk story methods, will describe the "Brokada Filipino Men's Healing Circle," a grassroots organized liberated masculinity space reorienting a radical process of healing amongst Filipino men across generations and throughout the diaspora. This panel is thus informed by the frameworks of sociology, ethnic studies, and psychology and helps expand the interdisciplinary identity of diasporic Filipinx studies as it expands the gendered narratives that are present in the scholarship.
