The Autonomous Index: Moving from Static Rules to Intent-Based OpenSearch Ops

By 2026, the sheer volume of data ingested into OpenSearch makes manual shard tuning and static Index State Management (ISM) unsustainable. We are still operating search clusters using 2021 mindsets - relying on fixed thresholds that don't account for dynamic workloads. This session introduces Intent-Based Operations.

We will explore how to build an autonomous control plane that sits above OpenSearch, translating high-level business intents into real-time cluster reconfigurations. You will learn how to leverage the OpenSearch Performance Analyzer and custom Kubernetes Operators to create a self-healing, self-scaling search infrastructure.

The session includes a live demo of a cluster that autonomously rebalances shards and adjusts its own indexing thread pool in response to a simulated traffic spike, preventing the dreaded cluster status without a single human command.
