Kotlin Beyond Code: Growing Android & KMPs Open Ecosystem
Kotlin Open Source is more than code — it’s collaboration, learning, and community.
In this session, we’ll dive deep into the open-source culture within the Android and Kotlin ecosystem, exploring what it takes to build, maintain, and grow impactful projects.
I’ll share my own journey contributing to open-source — from creating Kotlin libraries (one reaching ~300 stars on GitHub) to contributing to projects like BitChat Android (by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey). Along the way, I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and how developers can meaningfully start contributing, whether it’s fixing a small issue or maintaining an entire library.
We’ll explore:
- How to start contributing and maintaining to open source - both Library and Project
- Lessons from building and scaling community-driven Android/Kotlin projects
- Common challenges in sustaining open-source libraries and projects (and how to overcome them)
Why contribution isn’t just about code — it’s about people, reviews, and collaboration
