DB-Less Horizontal Scaling: Keeping In-Memory State Across Kubernetes Pods

How do you horizontally scale an in-memory service without adding a persistent database? In this talk, I will share the journey of scaling an ephemeral Gameday metrics service from a single, fragile pod to a highly resilient cluster.

This session covers the architecture required to sync in-memory state across pods in real-time using an embedded NATS server into a Go binary.

Attendees will learn how Kubernetes Service NAT works, why Headless Services are essential for bypassing NAT to achieve direct pod-to-pod communication, and how this setup seamlessly solves split-brain and state replication challenges.
