Peers in Action: Advancing the Role of Lived Experience in Transforming Health and Social Care

We present a novel course design framework that advances peer-to-peer support services via undergraduate public health education. We describe experiential learning, evidence-informed peer support practices, and interprofessional education aspects that prepare students to address health challenges such burnout and mental health disparities. Drawing upon research on peer networks' effectiveness in reducing behavioral health burdens, we share how students can learn to address real-world and population health challenges by working with community-based initiatives and healthcare systems. We describe how to integrate certification processes, practice skills, collaborative learning, and peer action in mental health equity and prevention. This session examines how learning about mutual trust and peer support addresses local and national behavioral health priorities and contributes to community-driven solutions and healthcare improvement.
