Collecting usage data in open source can be a controversial topic, but recent shifts in attitudes have become evident. With extensive experience working with open source projects and companies over the past four years, our team has empirically established successful best practices and considerations. All open source projects should be aware of these to effectively track software usage. This talk will cover a range of considerations, encompassing community messaging and expectation management, security and privacy, compliance, ethics, and governance.
