Measuring the carbon footprint of software

There are many reasons why we want to measure the emissions of software. For action to identify and minimize hotspots, for reporting e.g. CSRD or for more transparency.

In this talk, we will look at the different starting points for different types of applications. This is not only about energy consumption (Scope 2), but also about the emissions generated during the production of hardware (Scope 3).

Specifically, PaaS cloud applications (using Azure as an example), Kubernetes, virtual machines (on-prem, cloud) and web are considered. We will learn about the tools and frameworks required for this and see how to obtain the necessary data basis (in the form of emission factors).

At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to determine and evaluate the emissions of their own applications.
