Session

Living Beyond Earth. Architecture for Extreme Environments.

Barbara Imhof will discuss her work, focusing particularly on designing modules for space stations, 3D-printing habitats on the Moon, ensuring circular strategies for lunar bases, and establishing the interconnection and relevance to terrestrial architecture.
The lecture will showcase LIQUIFER projects, including habitats for extreme and resource-constrained environments, and demonstrate how material and resource circularity can be achieved through the use of local building materials, novel building technologies, and methods of reuse and recycling, keeping resources in a continuous loop. Additionally, terrestrial projects that develop bio-integrated designs and new living architecture will be presented, highlighting the transformation of architecture from inert structures to programmable sites. The work is defined by transdisciplinary collaboration, merging diverse disciplines and extending the operational scope of architecture from Earth to space and back.
The sustainable practices developed through this unique lens in architecture respond to the challenges of our time, including climate crisis, shifting political landscapes, and ongoing social changes.
