Feature Flags: The Developer's Secret Weapon for Safer Deployments
What if you could ship code on Friday afternoon without breaking into a cold sweat? Feature flags give .NET developers the superpower to decouple feature releases from code deployments — enabling instant rollbacks, targeted rollouts, and A/B testing without a single redeployment.
In this session, we'll start with the basics: using appsettings.json as a simple on/off switch. Then we'll level up to Microsoft's FeatureManagement library, exploring how its built-in filters let you control feature availability by time window, user percentage, or specific audience targeting. We'll walk through real code using both Minimal APIs and traditional MVC controllers, showing how endpoint filters and FeatureGate attributes keep your feature logic clean and composable.
Beyond the built-in toolkit, we'll look at when and why you might reach for third-party platforms like LaunchDarkly, Unleash, or the open-source FeatBit — and what each brings to the table for enterprise-scale applications.
By the end of this session, you'll know how to make feature flags a first-class citizen in your .NET architecture, giving your team the confidence to ship continuously while keeping your users and your sanity intact.
