Session

From Wire Bytes to OpenTelemetry Spans: Inside OBI’s eBPF Instrumentation

How does raw application traffic observed by eBPF become useful OpenTelemetry telemetry? This session follows a request through OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation (OBI), using Aerospike as a concrete case study. We will trace the path from wire-level protocol activity and eBPF parsing through request correlation, BPF maps, ring buffers, userspace enrichment, and finally OpenTelemetry spans and attributes. Along the way, we will examine the trade-offs between doing work in kernel space versus userspace, verifier constraints, protocol parsing challenges, and what information may not be available on the wire at all. This talk is for observability, SRE, platform, and eBPF engineers who want to understand how zero-code instrumentation actually works beyond the high-level architecture.
