Trust Lives in the Gaps: Why We Misunderstand Trust in Design

We love to say users want simplicity. They don’t. They want confidence.

In complex systems—enterprise platforms, healthcare, industrial operations, and AI-powered products—the real problem is rarely too many clicks. It is uncertainty. People hesitate when stakes are high, when automation feels opaque, and when the cost of being wrong is expensive. Trust does not come from cleaner UI or faster flows. It is built in moments of ambiguity, failure, override, and recovery.

This talk challenges one of UX’s biggest assumptions: that better usability automatically creates trust. It doesn’t. Drawing from real-world experience designing high-stakes ecosystems, I’ll explore why trust breaks, why “human-in-the-loop” is often misunderstood, and why the future of UX is not designing for simplicity—but designing for human confidence, control, and dignity.
