When Complex Becomes Everyday: Approaches to Unique Patients in EMS Response

In EMS and Fire response, no two patients are ever the same—but some calls involve patients whose complex medical needs fall far outside routine experience and can overwhelm even seasoned providers. This presentation uses a real-world, narrative-based case to examine how “complex” can become the everyday reality for responders, and how those responders can prepare for, manage, and recover from these high-stress encounters. Participants will explore practical strategies for pre-planning, scene management, caregiver interaction, documentation, and post-incident reflection when responding to patients with significant special or complex healthcare needs. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and managing provider anxiety, maintaining clinical and operational control, and advocating effectively for the patient to achieve the best possible outcome during what may be a once-in-a-career call.
