Designing Energy Efficient Websites

Even though digital sounds and feels green, the reality is different. The internet may be digital, but it runs on electricity, much of which is still produced by fossil fuels. Digital technologies are currently responsible for about 4% of global carbon emissions. How we design and develop our websites can have a huge impact on the overall carbon footprint of the Internet. Designing energy efficient websites is an approach to designing digital products and services that are conscious of lowering carbon emissions by becoming more efficient. The choices we make in designing digital products, from UX design and development to the servers we use, can have a carbon cost and can contribute to global Greenhouse gases. In this session I would like to demonstrate how we can approach designing and developing energy efficient websites and how we can measure and calculate the carbon footprint of websites and the steps that can be taken to reduce it.

Why should you listen to me:
- I am a certified Linux Foundation Green Software Practitioner
- I am working with my team to track the carbon emissions of websites for clients
- I have a past presentation on the topic that is being used in the Digital Green Skills course sponsored by Microsoft (https://www.greenskills.inco-group.co/)
- I am in the Sustainability working group at the W3C defining best practices for Business and Product
