Code for sustainability: the Surfrider experience

Code for sustainability: the Surfrider experience

Sustainability is a hot topic right now. We are all trying to find ways to help. We reduce temperature at home, we resist the urge to get on last goodies from the conference expo hall. But, as developers, what does it mean for our code?

In this talk, I’ll bring you inside Surfrider Foundation Europe Plastic Origins. This open-source project aims at reducing plastic pollution at its source through technology. We – a team of 70 volunteers - code for sustainability. But how do we make sure that our code is sustainable?

We will share our findings and how we use the principles of green software engineering to ensure that we are not creating more emissions than the ones we want to remove:
- How we changed our software architecture to include sustainability requirements?
- How we managed to ship feature fast and work on sustainability?
- How we are approaching a sustainable design for our next hardware project
