Hand Off! Lift Off! Design Systems Bridging Time And Space (And Species?)

What happens when a cat and a dog are trapped in space and forced to work together to defeat aliens to return home? A crash course in collaboration, communication, and design-to-developer handoffs!

In this talk, we’ll use their interstellar adventure to tackle real-world challenges in design systems: ensuring accessibility requirements are communicated, design tokens are used consistently, and documentation is clear and actionable. Through practical examples, we’ll explore tools and plugins for Figma and Figma Dev Mode that streamline collaboration and create a shared language to bridge the gap between design and development.

Whether you’re a designer, developer, or somewhere in between, this talk will equip you with the tools and insights to make your handoff process as smooth as a zero-gravity spacewalk.

This talk bridges my passion for storytelling with technical presentations. We follow our main characters, Captain McMeowy and Lieutenant Good Boy who have crashed their rocket ship on a planet and now have to work together to escape before the dreaded alien Leaddine reaches them. With AI voices, we bring the characters to life as they work through common struggles of design to developer handoffs, particularly those around accessibility, design token usage and documentation, to learn how we can collaborate more effectively even though we may be speaking relatively different languages.

Technical Requirements:
This talk requires audio support.

Target Audience:
The target audience for this talk is UI/UX Designers in general who work with handing off materials to frontend developers. More specifically, we focus on hand offs in the world of design systems. Indirectly, frontend developers would also be at home in this talk as well.
