A recent microsurvey from CNCF about Financial Management in 2023 shown that nearly half of the correspondents have experienced an increase of cloud expenditure with the adoption of Kubernetes. There are multiple causes, from human to technological factors, but capacity overprovisioning came first by a long way with 70% of the answers.

On this session we will explore Karpenter, a new open-source node lifecycle management project built for Kubernetes that can dramatically improve the efficiency and cost of running workloads in the cloud by providing just-in-time capacity and consolidation features. Karpenter is under SIG-Autoscaling, and can replace the traditional Cluster Autoscaler (CA) for teams running Kubernetes on AWS or Azure.
