Power BI Beyond Read-Only: Writebacks and Automation with Fabric User Data Functions

For years, Power BI has served mainly as a "read-only" window into data. When users need to update a record, trigger a workflow, or run a custom algorithm, they must switch away from their dashboard. This often stalls decision-making.

This session introduces a paradigm shift: Fabric User Data Functions. We will explore how to turn your dashboards into "command centers" by running custom Python logic within the Fabric ecosystem. You’ll learn to bypass the challenge of managing external Azure Functions or bulky Power Automate flows by encapsulating business logic into reusable, high-performance REST endpoints.

Through a live demonstration, we will build a "Translytical" workflow from scratch. We’ll move from writing Python code in Fabric to triggering real-time data updates directly from a Power BI interface. Attendees will leave with a clear blueprint for bridging the gap between analytical insights and transactional execution, finally turning Power BI into a two-way street for data management.

By attending this session, you will learn how to:

✅ Master the Fundamentals: Understand exactly what User Data Functions are and where they fit in your Power BI solutions.
✅ Build & Deploy: Set up your first User Data Function.
✅ Enable Secure Writeback: Implement secure, reliable data writeback patterns that allow users to update sources directly from a report.
✅ Architect Translytical Flows: Design workflows that combine analytical insights with transactional execution in a single step.
✅ Extend Your Reach: Use the power of Python to bring automation and external connectivity to your BI solutions.
