An Equity State of Mind: Equity-Minded Assessment in the Union

When done well, assessment can help union staff tell a story about their impact and make data-informed decisions, yet assessment and social justice are often seen as two separate initiatives. In reality, good assessment requires equity to be at the forefront and integrated into every step. This session will help you break down what it means to be an equity-minded assessment practitioner (in understandable terms that do not require an advanced degree). You will get the opportunity to reflect on your own mental models and learn strategies to mitigate bias in your assessment work. Finally, as a real example of effective assessment practice, Cal State Northridge will highlight the pilot tool they developed to evaluate the justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion competencies of their staff and union board. After sharing their process and the results from their first-year pilot, you will get the opportunity to take the assessment. Finally, you will engage in reflective discussions on how you can up your equity game in your own union.
