Charging efficiency and safety

Charging efficiency and safety are critical in heavy-duty and marine applications. While current megawatt charging stations (MCS) reach capacities of around 1 MW, no solutions have yet been fully developed for ultra–high-power charging up to 3.75 MW. At Blowind, a new 3 MW (capable of reaching 3.75MW) charger has been designed to support both heavy-duty vehicles and future charging demands, fully aligned with IEC 61851-23 and IEEE standards.
The charging process is managed by an adaptive reinforcement learning algorithm, trained to operate reliably under both normal and faulty conditions. A deep Q-network (DQN) agent is developed to drive control in a dynamic environment, with execution times adapted to be compatible with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and the inherent delays in communication channels. The control process strictly follows CharIN standards, ensuring the correct sequence of charging states while simultaneously addressing protection requirements for conduction paths, components, and user safety. These intelligent controllers enable rapid charging for trucks, ships, and other large vehicles by providing robust control and ensuring reliable interoperability between stations and vehicles. Interoperability remains a central focus at Blowind, guaranteeing that controllers and components from different truck manufacturers operate seamlessly in accordance with CharIN requirements.
In addition, Blowind is innovating new designs for charging cables and connector to enhance safety and usability. To achieve these advances, tools such as MATLAB, PLECS Toolbox, OPC UA Toolbox, TIA Portal, and Ansys are employed for system design, simulation, and compliance validation. Beyond hardware, Blowind is developing a smart network of chargers capable of being activated within minutes. This network allows operators to easily manage pricing, monitor charger availability, and ensure accessibility for fleet drivers and public users.
