How STARS Can be Used to Improve Disaster Resiliency: Case of University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

Campuses can be positioned to play an important role in climate resiliency as disaster events become more frequent and severe. However, responding effectively to immediate crises while staying aligned with long‑term sustainability goals can be hindered by competing budget priorities, leaving both institutions and the communities they serve more vulnerable. While AASHE STARS is used to broadly advance sustainability, it can also be used as a potent integrative framework for strengthening campus resiliency. This session examines how specific STARS credits can be leveraged collectively to champion and bolster disaster preparedness and response, using the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s experience during the March 2026 Kona Low floods as a case study. Insights from UH Mānoa’s approach can help other campuses use STARS to build or enhance their own disaster resiliency strategies.
