User-Context-Aware Calculated Columns in Power BI

Calculated Columns in Power BI are a powerful tool, but until today they were associated with major drawbacks:
- they had an inevitable cost in terms of memory
- their values could not depend on the user (e.g. culture)
- they do not respect RLS filtering when calculating it's values

User-Context-Aware Calculated Columns in Power BI break the above barriers and they give birth to the concept of Virtual Calculated Columns, computed on the fly at query time

This opens the door to new applications/advantages:
- personalized reports where Calculated Columns show values based on user culture, current date, current time
- size reduction of your model in Import without removing Calculated Columns
- a different approach vs OLS when you need to secure a column and not a set of rows
- and even more than this!

In this session we will explore the features of User-Context-Aware Calculated Columns in Power BI and offer examples of applications, all in practical terms and using Power BI Desktop demos.

Members of the audience will learn when to use them and when to use other features such as measures or field parameters.
