The Entrepreneurial Efficiency Equation: Finding the One Constraint That Holds the Rest Still
In 2021 Zymergen went public at more than three billion dollars. Four months later its stock fell 68 per cent in an evening, because one question had never been asked with enough force: could a customer get its film into a manufacturing line? Most ventures have a version of that question live right now.
This talk treats a venture's rate of progress as a ratio: what the team generates, over what the world charges to deploy it. Six terms decide that rate, and at any moment only one is binding. Drawing on a working paper archived with a DOI, it shows why the numerator multiplies, why money cannot outrun uncertainty, and how to read your own equation.
Founders and investors leave with a diagnostic for naming the binding constraint, a test for knowing when they have named the wrong one, and a reason to leave the rest alone.
Format: keynote or talk, 30–45 minutes; workshop version available on request. Audience: founders, investors, executives and ecosystem builders.
