The hitchhiker's guide to architecture

When you're in a technical role, and you don't want to move into management, the illustrious role of 'architect' comes into the picture.

But many people who actually take up the job of architect, feel like Arthur Dent, when the world around them ceases to exist. They are no longer coding all the time the way they used to, and their new life feels as alien as being aboard the Heart of Gold. For some, this starts a wonderful journey of discovery in a new universe, for others it leads to a Marvin-like level of depression.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding in what an architect does, and what types of architects exist. That's why I'm going to walk you through the life of an architect. I'll dive deeper into the skills and responsibilities that come with the role, and I'll give you some tips and tricks on how to get started.

After this talk, your answer to "Can I be an architect, and it is something for me?" should be a whole lot better than just "42".
