How do you apply agile and DevOps principles to a complex, data-heavy scientific model that simulates forest growth? This experience report is from my time at an open-source environmental organization. We faced a challenge: a complex, manual process for generating configurations and running simulations for over 100 forest areas. This talk is the story of how we built a semi-automated CI/CD workflow to solve this. I'll share the technical challenges of versioning large data sets, the Python tools we built to automate configuration, and the human lessons of bringing a DevOps mindset to a team of scientists. This is a real-world story of taming complexity with agile engineering.
