Bringing “Open-Source” Principles Out of Software and Into the World

Over two decades in the Umbraco ecosystem, I’ve seen how open-source principles don’t just produce good software — they also produce unusually healthy, productive, and resilient human systems.

In this talk, I’ll share concrete examples of how Umbraco HQ initiatives, paired with community culture, have translated values like Transparency, Participation, and Symbiosis into real work getting done and meaningful relationships forming. We’ll translate those patterns into practical tools you can apply inside companies, nonprofits, meetups, professional associations, and other IRL communities.

Takeaways:
- Examples of Transparency, Participation, and Symbiosis I have seen in the Umbraco community
- Ways to bring those values into other environments to increase engagement and achieve organizational objectives
- Mindset shifts needed to have successful “open-source style” initiatives
