Session

Designing beautiful and intelligent maps

Have you ever wondered how you could customize a world map as if it were an Illustrator/Photoshop file for your application, adding/removing layers (e.g. roads, building footprints, administrative lines, etc.), changing colors, label fonts, sprites, ... to make them more usable or better fit the corporate identity of your product/client, or how you could create a customized, interactive, digital map of a festival, zoo, campus, amusement park, etc.? If the answer is yes, this talk is for you.

During the session:
- We'll quickly compare the major mapping providers that allow us to do this.
- We will review some basic concepts about map design and visualization.
- We'll look at some graphical interfaces and utilities available to make life easier for us or our designers.
- We will do some demos of customizing different types of maps.
- We will see how to add “intelligence” making our maps more dynamic, for example dynamically highlighting business types based on the time of day (e.g. coffee shops in the morning, restaurants in the middle of the day, etc).

And of course we will share many resources where you can continue learning and developing these skills.

What we will see in this session can be applied to applications created for any kind of device: web, mobile, desktop, TV, ... And although we will not program too much, the code examples we will see will be with JavaScript.
