Unraveling the mysteries behind the most popular mapping apps
The magic of computing is that it allows us to create applications that can solve very complex problems and hide all the complexity behind a simple and intuitive interface, making it useful and accessible to the user.
Have you ever wondered what kinds of technologies and procedures are hidden behind technologies like Google Maps or Google Earth to do things like:
- Providing a satellite map with worldwide coverage, cloud-free, continuous, etc.
- Dynamically customize the information displayed on the maps according to the time of day.
- How it is able to find and sort businesses by distance even if you search for an address by what a place is called in a “local” (unofficial) manner
- How it offers such a smooth navigation experience even if I'm in offline areas, my GPS misses more than a fairground shotgun, etc.?
- How does it offer the ability to download only a subset of the maps and all the data to offer an offline version that does all of the above?
- How does it find a 360º image regardless of where you drop the dolly on the map?
- Display information about the occupancy level of a venue at a given time.
- Aggregate GPS data to show traffic information
- How to create such a realistic 3D map
- ...
In this session we will unravel some of these mysteries and look at some of the technologies that allow you to do all this, and that you can incorporate into your applications.
